one of the premade KSP scenarios is a jool aerobrake. they built some sort of mothership with a bunch of heatshields in front. i guess that might be a good starting point. that being said, it might be better to use a tylo gravity assist to capure into jool orbit. probably a bit harder to set up, but a lot less dangerous. #2 =BB= Lt. The aerocapture maneuver starts as the spacecraft enters the atmosphere of the target body from an interplanetary approach trajectory Kerbal Space Program Aerobrake Manoeuver Calculator - hbrausen/ksp_aerocalc Aerobraking is very useful in KSP. (If you don’t know, aerobraking is when a spacecraft dips into a planetary body’s atmosphere to slow down, instead of its engines) Luckily, this map incorporates that into it! Planetary bodies that allow Aerobraking (Laythe, Duna, Eve, Kerbol, and Kerbin) have a small ”Allows Aerobrake” marker, which Aerobraking is extremely challenging but worth it, say mission engineers, because it eliminates the need for the heavy load of extra propellant that would otherwise be needed to place the spacecraft in its desired orbit. A little stress testing of the new heatshield part.Got the idea from /u/Pikrass on reddit and expanded it a bit :)I hope the speed of the text is ok because Aerobraking is a spaceflight maneuver that reduces the high point of an elliptical orbit (apoapsis) by flying the vehicle through the atmosphere at the low point of the orbit (periapsis). The resulting drag slows the spacecraft. one of the premade KSP scenarios is a jool aerobrake.

But it can, and it has, been used. How does KSP simulate objects out of focus? I've attempted to perform a controlled aerobraking maneuver against Kerbin upper atmosphere (>55km) when returning from a moon and decided to speed things up with fast-forwarding from the Tracking Station.
Since arriving at Mars in October 2016, the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter has been aerobraking its way into a close orbit of the Red Planet by using the top of the
KSP models the physics of all craft that are within 2.25km (thereabouts) of the currently active craft. That means that if you fastforward from the tracking station, NO craft are getting physics calculations. What happens to craft who get no physics calculations?
Use the vectors to adjust your Laythe periapsis to a suitable aerobraking altitude (about ~48,000m for Jool orbit or about ~45,000m for Laythe orbit). NOTE: Your periapsis will drop a little as you descend further into Laythe's atmosphere, so plan accordingly.

Well .. pretty much this entire episode is ship building. Sorry! In this Let's Play Tutorial Series I'll be going over the fundame So I'm planning my first mission to Jool and was wondering if a heat shield is needed for aerobraking ? While aerobraking on dune I didn't need a heat shield but I don't think this will work on Jool. I've been running some aerobraking test trials on kerbin and seem to have issues with the rocket flipping and rolling with a heatshield while going through the atmosphere.

KSP Aerobraking Calculator Enter your current altitude, orbital velocity, and periapsis distance into the calculator at right. Then, enter the apoapsis distance you want after aerobraking. The calculator will find a manoeuver to get you there.
If you push aerobraking too far, you've lost the spacecraft, so one has to be cautious. But it can, and it has, been used. Trajectories can help you with aerobraking. Note that with heavy ships, aerobraking is less effective. That's just the way it is.
